Quotable Quotes

"Tis our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world.."
 - George Washington (1796)

"Commerce with all nations, alliance with none, should be our motto."
 - Thomas Jefferson (1799)

"The ongoing migration of persons to the United States in violation of our laws is a serious national problem detrimental to the interests of the United States." - Ronald Reagan, 1981

"Honor never grows old, and honor rejoices the heart of age. It does so because honor is, finally, about defending those noble and worthy things that deserve defending, even if it comes at a high cost. In our time, that may mean social disapproval, public scorn, hardship, persecution, or as always, even death itself. The question remains: What is worth defending? What is worth dying for? What is worth living for?" - William J. Bennett in a lecture to the U. S. Naval Academy, Nov 24, 1997

12-10-2011

  • Special Election Is Over!  Neil Ferguson won the election.  There will be no run off.  You can contact Neil Ferguson at http://electferguson.com.
ALSO, I am proud of Steve Hill for running a good campaign.  I do wish he won so that we could have another person who has the same values as I do.  Oh well, the conservative people had a chance to vote and they chose not to vote.  Here are the results.
CITY OF LEWISVILLE
DECEMBER 10, 2011 - SPECIAL ELECTION
UNOFFICIAL RESULTS - CANVASS TO BE HELD DECEMBER 19, 2011
COMBINED TALLY SHEET - COUNCILMAN, PLACE 2
Names Early Voting Election Day TOTAL %
Steve Hill 146 179 325 34.36%
Neil Ferguson 322 220 542 57.29%
Matt Lampe 29 50 79 8.35%
TOTAL NUMBER OF CAST VOTES 499 451 950
  • On a personal note, I am very disappointed that only 325 conservatives voted in this election.  There are 42,850 registered voters and only 325 conservatives voted for Steve Hill.  (I may repeat that a few times.)  You may question my wording but there was a very clear difference between the candidates. A difference more clear than I have ever seen.  A vote for Steve Hill was a vote for the values I believe in - a vote for what most of my supporters believe.  By the way, stop moving out of Lewisville...  Only 325... Very disappointing indeed.
    • I do not know if the other candidate was even aware of the tactics of his supporters.  What did his supporters do?
      • One used the email list from a civic organization to give her endorsement.  The email was sent to me by someone on that list.
      • Another person made a copy of Steve Hill's website.  Hill's website is at www.HillForLewisville.com and they had made a fake one.  I wish I took a screen shot of it (not in cached pages).  You can see from search engine results the title and how the other side plays (site search 1, 2, 3).  At this time, the other domain name that they have purchased is the .org version and it points to the wide range of rules for the CDBG entitlement program which I have blogged about.  Steve Hill is on the conservative side like I am on how that money should be spent.  So, I am not sure what they are trying to say by pointing to the Government CDBG site except that they can go the liberal direction on how that money is spent.
  • NEXT ELECTIONS are 2012
    • PRIMARIES which are currently dated to be March 6, 2012.  It may move to an later date... May also be a RUNOFF Election after
    • CITY ELECTION - Annual City Election in May. (& runoff if no clear winner)
    • NOVEMBER Elections - Every year.  This one is for President

      • Minutes of this meeting when available - NOTE: I have been asked by a handful of people why this meeting was done after the City Council Meeting and a few other leading questions...  I personally do not think the meeting was placed after to actually hide anything.  There were some deadlines that needed to be met and the time before the regular council meeting was filled with workshop time.  There were a few citizens that stayed after and attended this meeting and made some input.  We will see what is documented in the minutes when they are published by the City Secretary.  I do not know when that will be but you can call her.

12-02-2011:  Early voting Continues.  Steve Hill, who is The Conservative Candidate that I vote for,  will need your help to get elected. He has asked that I pass this information on to you…

    • Please tell all your friends in Lewisville to vote for Steve Hill.  Do it daily.  He could use your endorsements and donations… goto www.HillForLewisville.com or Email at steve.a.hill@gmail.com
    • Vote at the Lewisville Annex (Library location) for the Special Election - Lewisville City Council unexpired term for Place 2.
      Election Day: - Saturday, December 10, 2011, 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM
    • On a personal note from me…
Voting for a candidate should not be just because you heard the name or because you met them. They are all nice people (candidates and those on the Council). What it comes down to is what values they believe and practice. Have they been involved? What side do they take on the issues? Does that reflect your beliefs? Talk is one thing, action is another! Have they been vocal before running for office? Why are they running – just because - just to be in office – or is it to make a true difference?
So the question I get asked most is, “Who should I vote for?” That is up to you. I am Voting for Steve Hill.  For almost two years, Steve has been coming to City Council meetings and has spoken up as a Citizen on the issues.  He has volunteered for committees and was passed over even though he was the only one on the list that had even attended committee meetings.  He stands up for his conservative values and beliefs like I do – that is the kind of elected official that represents me.
The future of Lewisville, this State, this Country really depends on how you vote on every election – there are several elections every year. It would be nice if we can start electing true conservatives so that we can make a difference.
If you are thinking about running in a future annual election, please get involved now. Contact me and let’s talk.

11-25-2011:  "Young Heroes of the Guard" toy drive.  It is time once again for our annual Texas State Guard "Young Heroes of the Guard" toy drive. This is the 3rd year that we have done this and the response has been great.
We are taking toy donations until December 15th.

Please look over the long version which has some backup material that might peak your interest. Here is one that I think you might be concerned about or just want to know about:
      • ITEM 2. Public Hearing: Consideration of the Proposed FY 2011-2012 Budget, Property Tax Revenue Increase and Property Tax Rate.
        • Note:  The way this Item is written is due to legal reasons.  The tax revenue increased from last year and the Tax Rate is the same.  See the 08-29-2011 post.
    • Minutes of the meeting...

09-11-2011:  Remembering 9-11-2001:  Nearly 10 years ago I was trying to make sense of the terrorist attacks on our Country.  I did not want people to forget as they already started doing about two months after.  I felt that I had to do something.  So on my business site, I created a Tribute page for the 9-11 Tragedy which was one of the first of its kind.  Over the years, I have received many calls about the site and how glad they were to find it.  It was basically a list of submissions or attachments that I received from emails.  Basically a place to put images and reminders that should not be forgotten.  Others have created pages and used some of this information (for which I am grateful).  There are some really good sites out there.  Please Google "911 Tribute Page" and look around.

    • Ceremonies on 09-11-2011:  There are two locally that you may want to attend:
      • 08:45 AM, Fire Station #1 at 188 N. Valley Parkway; Lewisville, TX 7567.  See the Flier
      • 06:45 PM, a candlelight memorial ceremony on the east lawn of the Denton County Courthouse.  The event will begin at 6:45pm and is expected to end at 8:00pm. See the Flier
    • How did it change your life?  For many of us, we know where we were and what we were doing when we heard the news.  Watching it live on the television, gathering with family and friends, then just waiting to know what was next.  On the day after, 9-12-2001, I noticed something wonderful.  This Country came together and wanted to work together to make this Country secure and self sufficient.  It is a shame that a disaster made it happen.  It is a shame that many have reverted back.
Some things have forever changed.  Who would have thought that Hijackers would crash planes like guided missiles?  At the time it did not enter our minds - until it happened.  Looking back, why did we not think this could happen?  Now we know.  Because of the evil people in this world, some of our freedoms are gone forever such as absolute privacy - maybe we never really had it?  And now, 10 years later, have we recovered?  Maybe, Maybe not.  In any case things are different now.

09-07-20111:  The Republican Candidates Debate.  If you missed it, you can see it online

09-04-2011:  SAD NEWS: I am very saddened this morning to hear that Lewisville Councilman David Thornhill passed away yesterday from a heart attack. I do not know any of the details or funeral arrangements at this time. I ask that we all pray for his wife and family.

    • Update 09-05-2011:  No Finalized plans yet, but they are trying to have a memorial service on Wednesday (9-7-2011) at 10:00 AM at the Council Chambers (this is tentative).  If things change about the Service, I will update here.
      • Sunday morning we were informed that David was taken to the hospital on Saturday night about 11 PM. At that time (Sunday Morning) we were also informed that he had passed away.  No other details.
      • Obituary
    • Update 09-06-2011:  The memorial service has been moved to the MCL Grand Theater at Church St. and Charles St.  It is across the street corner from City Hall.  It will still be at 10:00 AM on 09-07-2011.

08-31-2011:  Best wishes to Retired Lewisville Fire Chief Rick Lasky – well, not completely retired. Chief Lasky is going to be teaching and speaking in the Emergency Services Circuit and working with many different organizations. You can learn more about Chief Lasky from his website at www.prideandownership.com. BTW, he also told me that Lewisville was his home. You will see him around.
At the retirement ceremony, there was a great video produced by Adam Capetti for Chief Lasky's Retirement Video. You can view it at:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyMgdqDyZow and/or http://youtu.be/GyMgdqDyZow
You can thank Chief Lasky for his Service via Email at rick@prideandownership.com
Also congratulations to our new Fire Chief Tim Tittle. Promoted from Assistant Fire Chief, Tittle has been with the department since 1977 and has been promoted through the ranks to this VERY WELL deserved position. Lewisville is in good hands.

08-29-2011:  Lewisville City Council Meeting on 08-29-2011:

    • 06:00 PM, Called Special Session Council Meeting.  This meeting was called because we have to have two public hearings on the Budget (see 08-13-2011 Entry and after meeting comments)..  Please look over the Agenda - Short Version or the Long version with backup material. Please look over the long version which has some backup material that might peak your interest.
      • NOTE:  It appears the City Budget Public Hearing Notice is written in a such a way that citizens believe we voted for a Property Tax Increase.  (The way the language is written is due to legal requirements.)   I have received a few calls this morning from people who want an explanation as to why I voted for a “Tax Increase”.  I explained that if I wrote the notice it would NOT have been called “Notice of Public Hearing on Tax Increase”. I would have wanted to say, “Notice of Public Hearing on ACCEPTING the Tax REVENUE Increase AND THE VOTE TO KEEP THE PROPERTY TAX RATE THE SAME.” But that does not flow to well as a heading does it? (grin).  I encourage you to come to the meeting.
    • Minutes of the meeting...

    • 07:00 PM, Regular Council Meeting.  Please look over the Agenda - Short Version or the Long version with backup material. Please look over the long version which has some backup material that might peak your interest. Here are a few items that I think you might be concerned about or just want to know about:

      • DIRECT LINK to Preliminary Budget in PDF format.  I recommend reading the first chapter which is about 45 pages.  Skim the rest.  Arrive on time and get a summary as the City manager goes over the budget in detail.
      • Q:  What time does it Start?
A:  Starts at 9:00 AM and we should be done in afternoon.  In the past, we closed about 3:00 PM
      • Q:  Can I walk in late?
A:  yes, In and Out all day if you like.  There will be about 30 minutes for lunch around 11:30 AM or so.  It is not a set time.
      • Q:  What will be covered?
A:  The Agenda will give a summary.

After Meeting Comments: When the minutes of this meeting get posted, I will put a link here but these are my notes for a few key points that I think will peak your interest...

      • Budget Summary:
        • Revenues for the City come from Property Taxes, Sales Tax, and other (fees from services charged, fines, and a lot of other).
        • Budget is our operating costs, debt payments, and other expenses planned for the budget year.
        • To meet the budget, we will need to cut items in the budget or draw down from General fund.  Addressed later in these comments.
        • Overall the City is doing pretty good as compared to other Cities.  However, if you have been attending Council meetings, you know that I have been trying to cut out things.  Kind of like the Project 2025 I mention below.
      • State Sales Tax Election this November.  It will be for voter approval of SALES Tax increase of 1/8 Police and 1/8 Fire.  The approval will be for 5 years so that the City can accumulate funds for equipment and new fire station, etc...  In five years, it will come back to the voters for another period of time.  I am in support of this and I will be voting yes when I go to the polls in November 2011.  Sales taxes will then be at the max allowed like most other cities.  This is a consumption tax increase and will save the need to raise real property taxes.
      • Water Rate increase of 0.659% which is about 18 cents per average water bill.
      • Sewer Line Cleanup service that the City offers will stay the same but the after hours rate will increase from $100 to $140.  See the city website for details.
      • Ambulance transport rates will increase.  Rates are determined by a number of factors that includes itemized billing for services, treatments, and distance transported, etc...   Resident and Non-resident average rates will increase from about an average of:
        • $677 to $780 for residents (average)
        • $824 to $950 for non-residents (average)
      • Real Property Tax rate for the City will remain the same at $.44021% (44.021 cents per $100 of real property value).  The vote was a combined vote for the acceptance of the slightly increased revenue from expected taxes and a vote on the tax rate to keep it the same. Click here for the notice.
Also, please keep in mind that your property taxes are from three taxing entities and those other agencies may raise (or lower but I don't expect that) their rates (here are the 2010 figures):
        • Lewisville ISD, 1.42670%
City of Lewisville, 0.44021% (remains the same for 2011)
          Denton County, 0.27390%
A total of 2.14081% for Real Property Tax Rate for 2010.
      • Draw Down out of General Fund for $142.923 to meet budget needs.
      • General Employee wage increase of 1.5%
      • Pull (another draw down) $160,000 from General Fund for the 2025 Project.  Voted 4:1, I voted against this because I do not think we need to pay a consultant to facilitate the meetings composed of Citizen volunteers.  Since staff members will be attending these committee meetings, I think they can facilitate.  This 2025 Project is a conceptual type committee to set a path of what the City should look like in 2025, etc.

    08-01-2011:

    • Lewisville City Council Meeting on 08-01-2011:
      • WORKSHOP SESSION – 6:30 PM
Discussion of Regular Agenda Items and Consent Agenda Items.  This is a regularly scheduled open meeting.
      • 07:00 PM, Regular Council Meeting.  Please look over the Agenda - Short Version or the Long version with backup material. Please look over the long version which has some backup material that might peak your interest. Here are a few items that I think you might be concerned about or just want to know about:
        • ITEM C. Continued Public Hearing: Consideration of Issuing Two Oil and Gas Permits for a Site Located at 290 West Southwest Parkway, Known as the B & H NE-1H and SE-1H Wells, as Requested by Titan Operating, L.L.C.

After meeting Comments:  I recused myself from this Public hearing because I am in one of the pools for the wells.  More than 90% of those in the pool area signed a lease to get profits from gas leases.  There were people that showed up to complain that did not even live in the pool area discussed.  It did not pass.

        • ITEM 6. Consideration of Issuing a Letter of Consent as a Property Owner With a Protected Use Located Within 200-500 Feet of the Proposed Ingram Gas Well Permits SW-1H and NW-1H, as Requested by Titan Operating, LLC.
"... Staff received a letter on July 18, 2011 from Titan Operating, LLC requesting that this item be tabled until the August 15, 2011 City Council meeting."
NOTE: The staff RECOMMENDATION: That the City Council table the request until the August 15, 2011 City Council meeting.
        • ITEM 7. Consideration of an Ordinance Approving a Negotiated Resolution Between the Atmos Cities Steering Committee and Atmos Energy Corp., Mid-Tex Division Regarding the Company’s Fourth Annual Rate Review Mechanism.

    • Citizens Police Academy applications now being accepted
The Lewisville Citizens Police Academy, the closest civilians can come to the men and women in blue, short of pursuing a badge of their own, is accepting applications for its 2011 class that starts on Sept. 1, 2011.
The free 13-week program includes instruction and training experiences from the classroom to the firing range. Since 1989, dozens of Lewisville residents have gained a better understanding of local law enforcement efforts through the program.
Classes are held on Thursday evenings, and there are Saturday sessions on Oct. 8 and Oct. 15. Graduation will be Dec. 1. After completing the class, many graduates join the CPA Alumni Association and volunteer with the department in a variety of capacities. Alumni also are eligible to ride with patrol officers as observers.
For information on the next class, scheduled to begin in September, call Training Coordinator Alvin Bilby at 972.219.3608. Participants must be at least 18 years old before classes begin and either live or work in Lewisville. Class space is limited, so those interested in participating should apply as soon as possible.  Media contact: Alvin Bilby, Training Coordinator, 972.219.3608

    • 07:00 PM, Regular Council Meeting.  Please look over the Agenda - Short Version or the Long version with backup material.  Please look over the long version which has some backup material that might peak your interest.  Here are a few items that I think you might be concerned about or just want to know about:
      • ITEM C. PUBLIC HEARING: Consideration of a Resolution Authorizing the Adoption of the Community Development Block Grant 2011 Annual Action Plan Including Amendments to the CDBG-R Recovery Act Allocation; and Authorization for the City Manager to Submit the Plan to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
      • ITEM 7. Consideration of Issuing a Letter of Consent as a Property Owner With a Protected Use Located Within 200-500 Feet of the Proposed Ingram Gas Well Permits SW-1H and NW-1H, as Requested by Titan Operating, LLC.
      • ITEM 8. 07-11-2011:  Lewisville City Council Meeting on 07-11-2011:

    • WORKSHOP SESSION – 6:30 PM
      • Discussion of Regular Agenda Items and Consent Agenda Items
    • 07:00 PM, Regular Council Meeting.  Please look over the Agenda - Short Version or the Long version with backup material.  Please look over the long version which has some backup material that might peak your interest.  Here are a few items that I think you might be concerned about or just want to know about:
      • ITEM F. PUBLIC HEARING: Consideration of Issuing Two Oil and Gas Permits for a Site Located at 290 West Southwest Parkway, Known as the B & H NE-1H and SE-1H Wells, as Requested by Titan Operating, L.L.C.
        • After Meeting Comments:  I recused myself from this item because I am in the pool of the wells on this site - that is, I removed myself from participation to avoid an appearance of a conflict of interest.  It is being postponed until the August 1, 2011 council meeting and I will recuse myself again.  I expected it to be passed since so many property owners had signed a lease and there was not really a reason to deny it since property owners in the 500' range had signed a waiver.  Looking at the few properties that had not signed a lease in the pool area, my guess is that nearly 80% or more of the land owners in the plat area signed a lease.  See the plat map on page 42 of 433 in the Long version of the agenda.
